Katie.

One week ago today my beautiful, 12-year old, gray and white, tuxedo tabby passed. As many of you know, Katie was diagnosed with cancer in December 2005. The veterinarian gave her six months. So, earlier this year, when another veterinarian gave her six months to live, I had faith.

I really do not have much else to say about my furry little companion. It is a very personal situation, but I do have a warning. I chose not to have Katie spayed. What I have learned in the last four years is that if a cat is not spayed and she goes into heat without fertilizing the eggs, the unfertilized eggs settle in her breast tissue. That increases her chances in developing breast cancer.

While I do not know the cause of Katie's cancer, I would not feel right closing this chapter without telling others with cat companions this bit of information. Please keep it in mind when making decisions about your cat's health when talking to your veterinarian.

Knowing what I know I would have made the same decision. That's me. Now you have a little more information and a choice.
